Each month, we will feature a member of our Board and share why they are committed to serving children, youth and their families.

This month, Don Pilger took the time to share a bit about his values and how he hopes to inspire others.

How long have you served on the Harmonium Board of Directors?

28 years

What drew you to serve on the Harmonium Board of Directors?

My early involvement in the Big Brothers program revealed to me the importance of a stable family life for youth.  I then learned of Harmonium’s programs, and I realized how vital this agency’s services are, in our community.  I was excited to volunteer my time, and become involved in an organization which is dedicated to the well-being of youth and families.  My experience with Harmonium has been extremely favorable and rewarding; I am well into my third decade of service!

What about the Harmonium Mission and/or vision resonates with you? And why?

Harmonium’s Mission: To provide quality services that advance well-being in children, youth, and their families through safe, nurturing, and respectful relationships. Harmonium’s Vision: An inclusive and equitable world where all children, youth and their families flourish and realize their fullest potential.
I have been consistently impressed with the breadth of services provided by Harmonium, in furtherance of our Mission and Vision.  Our achievements have included the creation of educational opportunities, prevention services, after-school programs, counseling, and other intervention services for youth.  Through my personal experience with family and friends, I have come to appreciate the immense value of the opportunities and programs which we provide.

What inspires you about Harmonium (services to children, youth and their families)?
The Harmonium Board and Staff are comprised of stellar individuals who share a strong desire to serve youth and families in San Diego.  Such a special calling can be rare, but is vital in our community.  I have been awed by the giving nature of the individuals associated with this agency, and I am thrilled to be a part of such an indispensable force in our community.

What would you say to inspire children, youth and their families?
Always remember the maxim: “For it is in giving, that we receive.”  Giving back to individuals in our community is one of the most gracious acts that we can perform.  It creates a cycle of charity which can be endless, for the benefit of all.
