A Macrosystemic Approach to Empowering Adolescents Within the Context of the Family and the Community

Written by:  Larry Laveman, LCSW, BCD; published in the Journal of Mental Health Counseling (Vol. 22, No. 1, January 2000).

Abstract - Harmonium, Inc., is a community-based agency that counsels adolescents who are at moderate to high risk of developmental defeat because their behavior either threatens their health or jeopardizes their future.  The Harmonium Project is designed to assist these adolescents through a collaborative strength-based counseling model built on the integrative capacity of the macrosystemic model of psychotherapy (Laveman, 1997).

With a specific focus on autonomy and differentiation the Harmonium Project teaches counselors how to trace consistent underlying patterns that are embedded in an adolescent’s life across sub system boundaries so that problems at home, school, or in the community can be viewed in a uniform manner and treated within the relational context of the family and community systems.  complete article...
